I was concerned about the smell from the drain of the kitchen sink installed in my apartment, so I installed the "KALOLINNA drain cover" I purchased from Amazon to the drain of the One Trap. After that, the backflow of air from the drain stopped, completely resolving this problem!

The condominium I live in is 40 years old, so it is deteriorating in many places, but for the common areas, several large-scale repair work and repairs have been carried out at any time through the management association and the management company, so I am currently able to live comfortably.
The management association cannot be involved in defects in the exclusive area, so maintenance must be carried out at the responsibility of the class owner, but for drainage pipes, high-pressure cleaning is performed free of charge for all households once a year.

However, the smell from the drainage pipes this time is likely to be a problem that cannot be improved with just high-pressure cleaning.
Before installing the drain cover, I sometimes heard a bumpy sound from the sink drain, so it seems that this is the reason for the smell.

Later I looked up online about the beat-beating sounds and found that the following causes could be found:
There are various causes, including fatal ones, but since it is an old apartment building, it is likely that the main cause is minor clogging due to aging of the drainage pipes.
However, in addition to cleaning with Pipe Unisch, high-pressure cleaning of drain pipes by specialists is also carried out annually, and one-trap is cleaned and fixed correctly on a regular basis. As a result, the drain seems to be flowing normally, so I think there is probably a fatal problem with the drain pipes. Therefore, I would like to hope that the backflow of air from the drain will stop and the odor problem will be resolved.

  • One Trap Misfit
When residents on the upper and lower floors run water and make a banging noise, the most common occurrence occurs when the deodorant one (one trap) is not firmly fixed. To attach the one trap, rotate it clockwise to push it in firmly.
  • Drain Trap Issues
Drain traps are an important part of preventing sewage odors and pests from rising. Sludge-like dirt accumulates in this trap, which can block the flow of water and make noises.
  • Drainage by residents on the upper and lower floors
When residents on the upper and lower floors flush water, the air from the shared stand pipe is pulled, but when the private pipe is almost clogged, there is no air and a rattle noise will be heard trying to get air in through the drain. In this case, it is generally best to clean the drain pipes by cleaning them neatly.
  • Reflux of air
This is a phenomenon in which when a large amount of water is suddenly flowed, the pressure inside the drain pipe changes, causing air to pass through the drain trap and rise with a "beating" sound. This is especially common when drains are narrowed with dirt.
  • Pipe clogged
It is the most common cause. Oil stains, fine ingredients, and detergent residues that appear in daily cooking gradually accumulate inside the pipes, narrowing the passage of water. This also blocks the air passageway, resulting in a sound.
  • Drain pipe deteriorates or damage
If the drain pipes deteriorate over time due to long-term use, or if external factors such as earthquakes cause gradient misalignment or cracks, the water flow will not be smooth and cause noise.
  • Clogged drainage basin outdoors
The drain that flows from the kitchen is eventually collected in an outdoor drain basin. This drainage basin is responsible for temporarily receiving dirt contained in household wastewater, but if you neglect regular cleaning, a large amount of oil and sludge will accumulate in the basin.
If the drainage basin gets clogged, the flow to the sewer will be blocked, resulting in difficulty flowing indoor drainage. In particular, the oil that flows out of the kitchen cools and hardens, and fills the basin as white clumps.
In this state, the air pressure inside the drain pipe increases with every time water is flowed, causing a rattling noise, and in the worst case, the drainage flows backwards.
  • Changes in atmospheric pressure
This is thought to be because odors are felt on days when the weather is not very good, and when the low pressure approaches and the pressure inside the room drops, the difference between the pressure inside the drain pipe and the air with a foul odor will flow backwards towards the room.

From now on, we will explain the details of the "KALOLINNA drain cover" installed in the drain of one trap, as well as how to install it.

Product description for KALOLINNA drain cover (35-40/40-50)

KALOLINNA drain covers are available in two types (35-40/40-50) depending on the diameter of the drain pipe. When I measured it, the PVC drain pipe at the one-trap drain had a diameter of φ40mm, so I purchased a product with a diameter of 35-40 from Amazon for 675 yen (shipping fee: 460 yen).

Details of this product are as follows:

About this product

◇ Brand: KALOLINNA
◇ Color: 35-40 (diameter φ)
◇ Finishing type: Soft silicone
◇ Features: Odor-resistant, clogging prevention, multi-channel design
◇ Manufacturer: KALOLINNA

Installing the KALOLINNA drain cover (35-40)

To maximize the inlet of the KALOLINNA drain cover (35-40), crop the top of the drain cover and attach it to the one-trap drain as follows.
The drain cover must be firmly inserted deep into the drain pipe to ensure a gap between the one trap and the drain.

Case where drain cover does not match the diameter of one-trap drain pipe

In fact, in addition to the product I purchased this time, I also purchased the two products mentioned above, just to be safe, but it didn't fit the diameter of the φ40mm PVC drain pipe at the one-trap drain, so I couldn't install it.
The GAONA GA-KW025 was unable to join the drain pipe and simply got on top, and when I put it on a single trap and washed it with water, the sink was overflowing as shown below, making it impossible to use.
The KALOLINNA drain cover (40-50) can be joined to the drain pipe, but with this diameter, the 50mm protrudes at the top, making it impossible to fit the one trap and it was unusable.
